After three wins at the 1st Lady Warrior Shootout at Community Christian, the Lyon County girls’ basketball team advanced to the final, but fell 38-37 to Hickman County on Saturday night. The Lady Falcons improve to 5-7 on the year, with over half of their wins coming in the last three days. The Lady Lyons slip to 8-3 after their strong tournament showing.
The first half was low scoring and back and forth, with the Lady Lyons scoring 11 points in each frame to lead 22-19 at the break. Lyon County senior forward Hannah Holloman led the way with 8 first-half points, followed by junior Allison Murphy’s 4.
Neither team could generate much offense in the third quarter, with the Lady Lyons holding Hickman to 2 points, but only managing 4 of their own. Lyon County took a 26-21 lead into the final quarter, but let the game and the championship slip away, being outscored 17-11 and falling 38-37. The Lady Lyons’ three losses this season have come by a total of only 12 points.
Holloman led the team in scoring with 13, and was named to the All-Tournament team. Murphy was next with 9, with senior guard Sophia Bingham and freshman Kenttavia Matthews scoring 6 each, and sophomore guard Kayden Watts chipping in 3. Despite the loss, Coach Jeff Doom was upbeat about his team’s performance, saying, “We learned a lot about ourselves and are looking forward to the New Year.”
That New Year will begin with a trip to face 5th District foe Crittenden County on December 8. The Lady Rockets dealt the Lyon County their worst loss of the season on December 8th, winning 36-28.
