Caldwell County senior Dylan Gray knew the last Tiger wrestler to win an individual state title. He sees him every day. There are now two Grays to win a state title as Dylan captured the 182-pound championship Saturday in Lexington.
Dylan became the eighth Caldwell wrestler to win a state title and the first since his father Wes won the 160-pound title in 1995.
Gray came into the weekend the second-ranked wrestler in the 182-pound class. He defeated No. 3 Diion Leavell of Christian County 8-4 in the title match, capping a weekend that saw him win three of his five matches by decision. Gray defeated No. 5 Chase Blanton of Harrison County 3-2 in overtime in the semifinals.
The state title caps a season that saw Gray finish with a 49-2 record. For his career, it was the third podium finish at the state tournament for Gray, who finished fifth in the 160-pound class as both a sophomore and junior.
