Ohio had No Answers for the More Athletic Kentucky

Ohio coach Tim Albin joked that Kentucky should already have erected a statue of Kentucky coach Mark Stoops at Kroger Field before his team faced UK Saturday.

After Kentucky’s 41-6 win over Ohio Saturday and limiting Ohio to just 223 yards, Albin was even more complimentary about Stoops and his team.

“I just want to start by congratulating coach Stoops and his staff. His team did very well today. It was a big stage, great crowd, and a beautiful day. To beat them, we would’ve had to play basically flawless,” said Albin.

“I said this earlier in the week, but I do not see a weakness in Kentucky’s defense, and I stand by that statement. They are very athletic, and we had trouble adjusting to their speed on both sides of the ball. It’s impossible for us to simulate the speed of those guys but I did think we settled in well after the first quarter. We had too many missed tackles on defense but the guy who had the ball in their hands had a lot to do with that.

“I could sit here and say from this angle or that angle but they’re athletic. They did a nice job on some play calls and kept us kind of off balance. We had trouble catching some deep over routes and zone coverages. We have some first downs that we have to get cleaned up.

“In terms of all three phrases, it’s a tough, tough call. You don’t want No. 7 [Barion Brown] touching the ball (on kickoffs) because that puts big pressure on our kickers. Jack [Wilson] and Gianni [Spetic] had a big day today trying to make up for that.”

  1. I thought Wimsatt looked extremely good on his drive. He overcame stupid penalties (not his fault) and led the team to a touchdown. He was poised doing it. His arm was strong and accurate. He may need a closer look.

  2. I do think that Gavin not only needs a closer look but strong consideration for more active PT. Both QB’s have their strengths, but Gavin has the experience advantage and had the advantage of a better OL than Brock has had. Brock also at a disadvantage of what could be the worst pass protection in the SEC. Mincy was thought to be a contributor of positive development on the OL, but there are reasons UT did not extend the "welcome mat".

  3. The Offensive left side was getting whipped the majority of passing downs. Too many defenders getting into our backfield. I’m not close enough to the team to know what needs to be done but the coaching staff had better figure it out soon. We’re getting into the strength of the schedule. Ole Miss is just the beginning and may be the "easiest" game we are going to have for a while.
