One of the eastern Kentucky football coaching fixtures for over 30 years has decided to call it quits.

Corbin coach Tom Greer told WYMT Monday that he was retiring after going 46-5 in four years as Corbin’s head coach. The Redounds lost in the 2022 state title game to Boyle County and last season lost in the third round to eventual state champion Boyle.

The Redounds currently have a 36-game regular-season winning streak and won four district titles for Greer. Corbin was 8-2 in 2020, 12-1 in 2021, 14-1 in 2022, and 12-1 in 2023.

Greer was the head coach at Bell County from 1997-200 and went 34-14. He was also head coach at Whitley County for two seasons.

“Although I have held a variety of athletic coaching positions and have loved them all, being given the honor of coaching the Redhound football team holds a special place in my heart,” Greer said via social media. “Coming back to Corbin to coach was like coming home to where I learned to be a Redhound and what it means.

“But after 33 years of coaching and 34 years in education, I have prayed and reached a peacefulness about stepping down as the head coach and retiring.

“None of this would’ve been worthwhile without the Corbin community being who they are, the best fans who love students and all that the Redhound symbol stands for. Corbin school district who has gone above and beyond to support me and the football program— they believe in all students and I’m proud to work there. The coaching staff, football program, and players are a part of my family and a part of who I am. All three groups are completely committed and passionate about this program, and I know will continue to be.

“I truly don’t know what the next chapter holds for me, I’m sure God will reveal that in his time. I know this, (my wife) Susan and I will continue to support and love the Redhounds and the Corbin community.”

Whatever that chapter turns out to be, Greer has touched a lot of lives and created life-time memories for coaches, players and fans. He certainly will be missed not only in Corbin but by any high school football coach, player or fan who knew him because he was great on and off the field.
